School Administration

Mr. Sheardown, Principal and Mr. Finkenzeller, Vice Principal, are committed to supporting students in doing their best at school and in creating a safe and welcoming school environment.  Students and parents are encouraged to speak to the school administration if they have concerns about safety at school, academic concerns or any situations that may affect the well-being of members of the community.  In some cases, students will be sent to the office by a teacher and it is imperative that they report immediately and remain there until they have had a chance to speak to an administrator.  Please call 519-675-4432 and speak to the receptionist.

Anaphylaxis – Sabrina’s Law

Sabrina’s Law came into effect January 1, 2006.  Any student who has a severe or life-threatening allergic reaction to food or other substances MUST fill out a JPII Information/Emergency Protocol and submit it to the school.  Students who are required to carry an EPI pen must provide the school with a duplicate EPI pen to be kept in the Main Office in case of an allergic reaction.

Accidents

Accidents, regardless of how small they may seem, must be reported immediately to the Main Office so that appropriate treatment may be offered and parents notified.  The school will attempt to contact parents and/or emergency contacts.  If no one can be reached and in the school’s non-medical assessment a student is at risk, an ambulance will be called.  The school reserves the right to make determination to call an ambulance regardless of direction from the parent/guardian.  Parents will be responsible for all medical costs associated with transportation by ambulance.  Note:  the school board does not provide student insurance coverage for accidental injuries.

LDCSB Concussion Protocol

For parents/guardians and students it is vital and imperative that you immediately report a concussion that happens on or off of school property to Administration or your teacher.  The LDCSB concussion protocol documents can be found on the board website or picked up in the main office. If your child/ward is diagnosed with a concussion by a medical doctor/nurse practitioner, LDCSB C-3 Documentation of Medical Examination needs to be completed before the students returns to regular classes.

Bullying and Harassment

The Safe Schools Act outlines the responsibility for all members of the school community to make schools a place of welcome, inclusion and safety.  Students who experience bullying, harassment or any form of treatment that makes them uncomfortable at school should speak to a trusted adult about the situation.  In some cases, bullying or harassment can take place outside of school but affects life at school and it is important that students and families alert the school about these issues as well.

Student Cards

Every student is required to have their picture taken on school photo day so that they can receive a JPII Student Photo ID Card and for a school photo record.  This card is necessary for identification within the school, to access bus transportation where provided, purchase dance tickets, access the library and other school and school board functions.  Students are strongly encouraged to keep the student card with them while at school.  The student card can also serve as acceptable photo identification in the community.

Visitors to JPII

All visitors to the school are asked to report to the main office and sign into a guest book.  In order to maintain safety and promote success for all students, student visitors are not welcome to JPII during the school day unless part of an organized school activity.  Any student who is found in the company of a visitor who has not reported to the main office during the school day may face consequences in accordance with the safe schools act.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency in the school, teachers will direct students in the appropriate emergency procedures and at the direction of school administration or emergency personnel.  In preparation for potential emergencies, classroom teachers review the procedures with their classes and drills are conducted throughout the year.  It is very important that students cooperate fully in emergency procedures and drills.

Security Cameras

John Paul is equipped with security cameras that monitor activity in the school at all times.  School administration use recorded images to investigate incidents when necessary and in the interest of maintaining a safe school.

Tobacco Use

John Paul II Catholic Secondary School is a smoke-free, vape free and chew-free environment.  The use of e-cigarettes and vaporizers are included in the School Board Policy.  In accordance with School Board Policy and the Ontario Tobacco Control Act, the smoking of cigarettes or the use of any tobacco product including chewing tobacco is prohibited.  Students smoking on school property may be charged under the Smoke Free Ontario Act, 2017.   Students who use tobacco and vape products on school property will be suspended and referred to the Tobacco Enforcement Officer.   A fine for a student vaping or smoking on school property is $305 and a fine for a student share a cigarette or vapour product in $490.

Personal Property

It is strongly recommended that students put their names or other identifying marks on all personal property, and clothing, including uniforms.  Large sums of money, jewellery, clothing and personal electronics including cellular phones are unfortunately the object of thefts, and students are strongly advised to take great care with these items while at school.  The school will not be responsible for replacement of any personal items that have been lost or stolen.

Lost and Found

Students are asked to bring any found articles to the office where they will be placed in the lost and found for retrieval.  If a student has lost an article, they are strongly urged to come to the office and see if it has been returned.  Unclaimed items are donated to charity at the end of the year and following repeated efforts by office staff to have the student claim lost articles.
