Attendance, Lateness & Absence Reporting

Attendance

  • Regular attendance in all classes is essential for academic success in secondary school, future education programs and in the workplace generally. Supporting students in maintaining school attendance remains a key role for school administration in promoting academic achievement.
  • Students are expected to be in all classes every day including those days when special timetables or events are planned.
  • Unauthorized absence from classes is reported to parents or guardians immediately upon reporting through an electronic communication system.
  • Parents can also track student attendance via Parent Portal

Lateness and interruptions to class

  • The JPII school day is organized with suitable warning bells, travel time and teacher support to promote a well-organized school day.  Lateness and interruptions to class by individuals can interrupt the work of the entire class.
  • Students are expected to be in their first period classroom by 8:00 am.
  • If a student arrives to class after 8:20 am or more than 5 minutes after the start time of periods 2,3,4 or 5 they are to report to the main office.
  • There is sufficient travel time to allow students to be on time for all classes regardless of the distance between classrooms.
  • Students are expected to arrive in each class prepared with all necessary learning materials.
  • Students are encouraged to plan their day to limit breaks from classes while they are in session
  • Washroom breaks, while necessary during the day, should be as brief and infrequent as possible during class time.  Students are encouraged to use the washroom between classes.
  • Persistent issues may become the subject of a meeting with administration, parent involvement and temporary removal from class.

Absence Reporting

Parents, guardians or adult students are required to report absence from school for all students using the SchoolMessenger system. There are two ways to report absences:
App: download and install the SchoolMessenger app, from the Apple App Store, Google Play Store. You will need to sign up for an account using your contact information the school already has on file. Once you are logged in, select Attendance then Report an Absence * Website: Go to https://go.schoolmessenger.com/#/account/signup Once you are logged in, select Attendance then Report an Absence.
Phone: Call 1-833-275-6702 to report an absence using the automated phone system

  • Students who must exit school during the day are to report to the main office to ensure that they have been properly signed out.
  • Students cannot be excused from class to study or work in the school.  Students are to be in class while in school. This includes adult students, 18 years of age or older.
  • Any attempt to misrepresent a parent or obtain an absence through fraudulent activity can result in suspension from school.
  • If a student is absent for a test without an acceptable reason, they may forfeit the opportunity to write the test.
  • For extended illness, parents may arrange for homework to be sent home if not accessible on-line.  This can be made through contacting the teacher.

EXTENDED ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

If a student is expected to be away from school for more than five consecutive days, they are to report to the main office and obtain an Extended Absence form.  This document is intended to provide formal notification to teachers and to provide instructions to minimize the interruption to student learning for the student. It is strongly recommended that extended vacations be avoided during school time including the scheduled exam days.
