School Building Use

RESPECT FOR PROPERTY

Students are expected to treat the school grounds, buildings and everything in the school with respect. They are encouraged to help keep the buildings, cafeteria and grounds clean by using the many garbage containers in the school and on the grounds.  Students are encouraged to recycle waste whenever possible.  Those who destroy or deface school property will be required to pay the full cost of repair or replacement.  If a student loses or purposefully damages school equipment (i.e. library books and textbooks, musical instruments, computers, etc.) they may be charged the cost of replacement or repair.  Deliberate damage of school property may also result in suspension from school.

LOCKERS

All students are issued a locker for personal and private use throughout the year.

  • The locker remains the property of the school but is for use of the student.
  • Students are to use the assigned locker only.
  • Students may not occupy more than one locker
  • Each locker is to be equipped with a combination lock as purchased through the school.
  • In order to protect the contents of the locker, students should not share their individual locker combinations with any other students including close friends.
  • Lockers are to be kept clean, free of refuse and in good working order.
  • The cost of damage repair to a locker may be charged to the student or their family.
  • Students who are not in their assigned locker risk having the lock cut and the contents removed at the discretion of the school administration.
  • On rare occasions, it may be necessary for the school administration to access a locker.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

It is strongly recommended that students put their names or other identifying marks on all personal property, and clothing, including uniforms.  Large sums of money, jewellery, clothing and personal electronics including cellular phones are unfortunately the object of thefts, and students are strongly advised to take great care with these items while at school.  The school will not be responsible for replacement of any personal items that have been lost or stolen.

PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES

The expectation is that Personal Electronic Devices are off and out of sight during the instructional time.  Cell Phones and other personal electronic devices may be used only with the expressed permission of the classroom teacher and only in a manner that support the teaching- learning process.  Prohibited uses of personal electronic devices by students may result in disciplinary actions up to and including confiscation, detention, suspension.  Prohibited uses may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Use in any way that compromises the academic integrity of student assessment and evaluation (using cellphones during tests, exams etc.).
  • Use in any way that interferes with or disrupts the instructional day or teaching/learning environment.

Library

The JPII library is a bright inviting space and is intended for quiet work and study.  The library is particularly helpful to those students who have unassigned or “study” periods and need a quiet place to work during the school day.

  • A valid student card is necessary for access to library materials
  • Students must be in school uniform while in the library
  • Only drinking water is permitted in the library, absolutely no food is allowed.
  • Students must present their student cards in order to borrow books and are responsible for these books.
  • Each student can borrow 7 books, with a limit of 3 books on one topic
  • Material is on loan for 3 weeks unless designated otherwise and may be renewed by returning them to the library
  • Students can set up their own Library Account which allows them to renew their own books, put books on hold, review their ‘checked out’ books, etc.
  • Please return books in the “Book Return” near the Circulation Desk, or in the outside “Book Drop” beside the entrance to the library
  • An overdue fine, 20 cents per item per school day to a maximum fine of $5 per item, will be assigned for late returns
